ASCO and ASH Release Updated Guideline on the Use of Chemotherapy ...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) have released an updated joint guideline on the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), a class of drugs that stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, to treat chemotherapy-related anemia.

"One goal of these guidelines is to inform clinicians with the most up-to-date evidence from high-quality studies regarding the risks and benefits of ESAs in patients with cancer," said J. Douglas Rizzo, MD, MS, co-chair of the guideline panel and Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin.

This updated guideline, originally published in 2002, was derived from systematic reviews and analysis of published clinical trials.

The circular screen served to monitor the live onstage acts (among them, headliner Melissa Etheridge), as well as footage related to some of the causes that Safeway Foundation supports including health and human services.

Notes Rosenzweig: The curvature of the screen adds a certain sensual quality of image. They added a sense of close-ness that was almost subliminal. You just felt that much closer to the scene.

Among the items and entertainers that played on the screens was an interview we did with athlete Augie Nieto, who suffers with ALS (Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gherigs disease). He is totally engaging and very funny, and for someone so young to be that debilitated was truly a emotional time with the audience. The interview we produced gave enormous weight to the evening.

Cancer patient's son pleads for dog's return

THE son of a cancer patient is pleading with a thief to return his mum's dog.

'Cushie', a one-year-old Border Terrier, was stolen from outside the Co-op store in The Parade, Bourne End, at around 10.30am on November 17.

And now the elderly owner's son, Robert Irvine, is asking for the thief to return the dog, which was bought to help his mum through chemotherapy after a major operation last year.

Mr Irvine said: "The dog really helped her through chemotherapy so it is precious to her. Looking after the dog was a big distraction during her treatment.

"Stealing a domestic pet is a poor thing to do because the owner gains an emotional attachment to it."

He said he was not sure whether the pedigree dog was stolen to be sold on or to be used as a working dog.

Sisters' business idea is turning heads

AN ENTERPRISING woman who turned a battle against cancer into a successful business has been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony. Suzanne Gerrard from Altrincham started up Hats 4 Heads with her sister Corinne after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her hair through chemotherapy. Hats 4 Heads provides a mail order service for hats and chemical-free beauty products that are specifically designed for men and women experiencing hair loss. And in honour of her achievement she was named as Good Housekeeping magazine's 2007 Woman of the Year. The lunch is an annual event held to celebrate the success of nominated women, and to inspire others. Suzanne said: "After I lost my hair, I found that the services that should have been readily available were non-existent. Balding head "No-one can imagine the stress experienced when trying to buy a couple of hats to cover a rapidly balding head.
