The Appraisal Committee has prepared a Final Appraisal Determination on the use of Avastin and Erbitux in metastatic colorectal cancer and submitted it to the Institute.
The main recommendations made are as follows:
Avastin ( Bevacizumab ) in combination with 5-FluoroUracil plus Folinic Acid, with or without Irinotecan, is not recommended for the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.
Erbitux ( Cetuximab ) in combination with Irinotecan is not recommended for the second-line or subsequent treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.
People currently receiving Bevacizumab or Cetuximab should have the option to continue therapy until they and their consultants consider it appropriate to stop.
The management of metastatic colorectal cancer is mainly palliative and involves a combination of treatments ( such as palliative surgery, chemotherapy and radiation ), symptom control and psychosocial support.
Rapist Jinxela to spend life behind bars
The Johannesburg High Court has labelled serial rapist Mongezi Jinxela a danger who needs to be removed from society for a very long time.
Jinxela was today sentenced to over 1000 years in jail - effectively life in prison - plus an additional 20 years after being convicted on over 200 charges, including 66 of rape.
Over a dozen people crammed into court room 2D, to catch a last glimpse of Jinxela before he begins serving his sentence.
While sitting in the dock, the convicted serial rapist covered his head with his jacket, as Judge George Maluleke informed him of his punishment.
The judge slammed Jinxela for showing no remorse for what he had done.
Maluleke described the 39-year-old as a danger to society and said he had ruined too many young lives.
Sharpton outraged over financial probe
Sharpton called the news conference after reports emerged Thursday of a federal probe into his finances. The FBI and the IRS are investigating Sharpton for tax fraud and possible campaign finance violations stemming from his 2004 presidential bid, according to a person familiar with the investigation. They also are investigating the National Action Network and several businesses he runs. A Brooklyn grand jury is scheduled to begin hearing evidence in the case at the end of the month. Sharpton said he thought the timing of the investigation was suspicious, coming just weeks after he led a march on the Justice Department to demand federal intervention in the Jena Six case in Louisiana and better enforcement of hate crimes. The charges against the six black students accused of attacking a white student in Jena, La., led to the September demonstration by Sharpton and other activists who alleged local authorities were prosecuting blacks more harshly than whites.
